Loft Conversion Balcony Planning Permission – Is It Allowed?

One question we’ve heard time and again when planning a converted loft is, am I allowed to add a balcony to my loft conversion under planning permission? The answer is, it depends. If you are planning a full balcony area including space for a seating area, for example, then you will typically need to seek planning permission as it would not usually fall under standard planning permission for a home in the way that a normal loft conversion might.

However, if you are planning on adding a dormer loft conversion with a juliet balcony, this will usually fall under standard planning permission. A juliet balcony can give you the same benefits of fresh air and light that you would get from a full balcony but without the need to apply for planning permission. It usually involves fitting french doors to your loft dormer with a barrier across for safety, without a platform on which a person could stand.

Installing a Roof Window Balcony

One of our favourite ways to incorporate a balcony into a loft conversion is through the subtlety of a roof window balcony. Sometimes referred to as a Velux balcony, this type of loft balcony involves a clever design where your roof window transforms into a small balcony in seconds, all in one system. This type of loft balcony idea is perfect for smaller spaces and when you don’t want the hassle of extensive construction for your attic space. A roof window balcony is a great way to open up your new space and let lots of light and air in.

Creating a Dormer Balcony in a Loft

Similar to a dormer loft conversion, a dormer balcony is a simple way to add a balcony to your loft conversion. This type of loft balcony can create a cosy seating area outside, perfect for sitting with a coffee in the morning or enjoying late afternoon sun.

We’ve seen lots of great styling ideas for dormer loft balconies over the years and some of our favourite design ideas for loft balconies are those that match customer’s own personal needs and styles. A great loft balcony idea is to use your new space as an extra green space through adding small potted plants or a vertical garden, herbs are a great addition to a loft balcony and can really bring your new space to life with refreshing and relaxing scents.

More Loft Balcony Styling Ideas

When styling your new loft balcony, it’s a great idea to use natural materials that can join the outside with the inside and create a calming atmosphere. Why not create a cosy seating area with a small cushioned sofa or floor cushions, or a foldable set.

We’ve seen some great loft balcony styling ideas over the years, including brilliant lighting ideas. Solar powered lights can be a great way to introduce gentle lighting to your new loft balcony and fairy lights or string lights can create a great atmosphere. If privacy is a concern, add a foldable screen or taller plants to your balcony to create a physical barrier to prying eyes.

In terms of the materials used for your loft balcony, glass balustrades are a great option for both juliet and full balconies as they won’t block access to any views whilst remaining safe for use. French or bi-fold doors leading out to your new loft balcony are also a great tool to add the most possible light to your new loft conversion.

One more unusual idea for adding a balcony to a loft space can be the complete opposite of what you expect from a balcony and can completely transform your home. This is to add a balcony to the inside of your loft conversion, overlooking the lower floors. This can be a dramatic way to explore the extra space you’ll experience when converting your loft space, particularly for larger homes.
